@runningfree86 started drifting in 1989 and he had very little to learn from, because there was no Internet and he never saw anybody drifting in person. The best resource he had was books and magazines.

What is the most important thing available to you to help you learn to drift?

For me, it was my friends, especially Andy Yen, who would obsess with me about drifting and then go with me to go try the things we thought we were seeing in videos.

@shinjiminowa and @runningfree86 came to the USA to do demos and spread some drifting knowledge to a very young drifting scene in the USA. @tommyuchen and his organization SpeedTrial USA hosted the event at Buttonwillow. JIC provided an s13 and Hiro provided an AE86 for the Japanese legends to drive.

I learned a ton just from watching and listening to them on the track. @superstreet was there to cover the event, and I was so stoked that they put me on the article cover.

It's a nice coincidence that @jdmwong (who was Editor in Chief at Superstreet) will be our guest for next month's episode, and @runningfree86 will be another guest later this season of our podcast.

Phill Lee is one of the first street drifters in the Chicago area. He co-founded ClubFR, an organization created to get drifting off the streets and to legitimize drifting in Chicago and the Midwest area. Under his watch, ClubFR has helped produce D1 drivers and Formula D drivers, they’ve hosted the RS-R Drift Festival, Formula D Pro-Am, and most recently, Final Bout. From ClubFR’s inception to today in 2024, Phill played a role in establishing Chicago as an influential force in the USA in terms of drifting culture.
